Marimekko was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia. Bright, colorful fabrics were soon turned into clean cut dresses that flew off the shelves. Based in Helsinki, it wasn’t long before the architect Benjamin C. Thompson was featuring these dresses in his United States’ store Design Research. Then, in 1960, Jackie Kennedy bought seven dress, not only that, but she wore one of these beautiful frocks on the cover of Sport’s Illustrated. Marimekko branched out to bedding, kitchenware, and even toys.
Keep your eyes open, Marimekko has been popping up all over film and television for years. Whether its our Aarre fabric on the curtains of Sex and The City or our Kaiku Shower Curtain in Modern Family, Marimekko is alive and well. One thing that is so great about working at a store like Kiitos Marimekko, is the stories we hear from customers. Whether you had a fabric stretching in your dorm room in the Seventies or Boboo bedding on your child’s mattress, we love to hear your stories. Want to hear more of ours?
